Basic information
The Grand Canyon was established a national park in 1919 and is 277 river miles long and 280 miles long total. It is 18 miles wide and one mile deep. Humans used to live in the Grand Canyon more than 4,000 years ago. The Grand Canyon consists of two main rims, the North Rim and the South Rim and the canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon is the second most visited national park with over 4 million visitors per year.The South Rim is open all year round while the North Rim is open only from May 15th to October 15th because it is so cold. The Grand Canyon is least crowded between November and February. It is also home many endangered species like the Desert Tortoise, Mexican Spotted Owl and the Humpback Chub.
